The problem is after the Cell saga, after all the hype he's not a character that can play second fiddle anymore. His potential makes him stronger than Goku, which isn't a thing unless Goku's dead. You can't imagine him in the U6 tournament, his presence would've been weird. It would've been Babidi's battles all over again where a weaker Gohan is the one who fights the strongest enemy (Dabura).

What makes so little sense is how they're actively trying to make Gohan weaker.

If Gohan isn't supposed to be important anymore, fine...throw him to the side, keep him with Piccolo and just let Goku and Vegeta do their thing while the rest cheer them on. They made it that Gohan's lack of training and fighting is a negative character trait that constantly effects him throughout his life. But if you aren't going to properly address this or really just ignore it completely...don't have it.

Look at Krilin. He's a retired fighter but they didn't have to make him weaker. He just became less important. There was absolutely no reason to make Gohan weaker. You can keep him just as strong as he was during his battle with Super Boo and what changes? He's still going to be useless compared to Beerus, Godku, golden Freeza and the Frosty Saiyans.

In the end, you'd get someone stronger than Krillin but just as useless to the story.

The exact same I think, WHY actively making him weaker? To what purpose?
The way he lives now is fine, but it's not a crime to have him being at least strong as he was... making him weaker than ever will just piss off the fans.
I agree that GT did the right thing... Gohan became just a tad bit stronger because he doesn't train much, but he STILL trains sometimes.
He knows he would be useful if s*** happens, he doesn't want to fight but he still wants to be useful during crisis. That's a wise thing to do and a demonstration of love towards your family (in DB context I mean, where bad guys could jump out anytime anywhere whenever they please).
WHY this Gohan is depicted as THAT lazy is just too much... I mean it's not like he can't find an hour or two per day to spar with Piccolo, hell not even all the days.
